ETO hold their nerve to seal fifth Hungarian title

ETO FC of Győr capped a sensational return to the pinnacle of Hungarian football on Saturday by claiming the three points they needed to dethrone last season's champions Ferencváros.

ETO only returned to the country's top tier last season after financial difficulties had seen the four-time previous national champions relegated to Division Three in 2016, but a seven-match unbeaten run at the start of this current campaign hinted at the promise of a high finish and when the club rose to first place after matchday 17, their rivals knew that Balázs Borbely's team meant business.

Meanwhile, Ferencváros, Hungarian champions for each of the past seven seasons, were having to juggle a tough task to retain their title with a successful UEFA Europa Liga league-phase campaign. The almost relentlessly good form from ETO ultimately proved too much to supercede, the club from the provincial city of Győr taking a one-point lead into the final round of fixtures, which saw them travel to mid-table Kisvárda while Fradi hosted Zalaegerszeg at home in the Groupama Aréna.

A tenth-minute goal from ETO's top goalscorer Nadhir Benbouali settled any early nerves and they preserved this advantage thereafter, Fradi's three second-half goals and 3-0 victory proving academic as ETO celebrated moving to an unassailable 69 points. Elsewhere, Paks's 3-1 away triumph at already-relegated Diosgyőr confirmed their bronze medal and qualification for the European Conference League next season. As had already been decided prior to the final fixtures, Kazinbarcika will join Diosgyőr in being relegated to Hungary's second tier next season, their replacements being the capital-city duo of Vasas and Budapest Honvéd. The Fizz Liga's top scorer overall was Dániel Lukács of Puskás Akadémia.
