Fradi win 25th MOL Hungarian Cup!
An extra-time strike from Toon Raemaekers was enough to secure a record 25th Hungarian Cup title for Ferencváros, that late single goal in an attritional contest denying Zalaegerszeg the addition of this year's title to their only previous success in the competition in 2023.
Following the minute's silence held in memory of Hungarian football legend László Fazekas, who passed away earlier this week aged 78, Ferencváros and Zalaegerszeg both started the 2026 MOL Hungarian Cup final cautiously, the former threatening first in the 12th minute when Rommens tested the latter's goalkeeper Gundel-Takács from distance. From then it was Ferencváros who dominated possession and the game, pinning their opponents back and restricting them to sporadic counter-attacks only.
Robbie Keane's men were almost constantly on the front foot and O'Dowda and Zachariassen both went close to opening the scoring, but Zalaegerszeg did well to repel every attack. As the match wore on, it becoming increasingly likely that the outcome would be decided by just one breakthrough. Such an occurrence didn't happen in normal time though, so for the fourth time in a row the Hungarian Cup final went into extra-time.
Almost immediately, Fradi were given a golden chance to take the lead when Amato fouled Corbu and referee Márton Rúsz pointed to the penalty spot in the 93rd minute, only for Gundel-Takács to save Yusuf's spotkick with his legs. A header by the same attacker was well-saved by Zala's goalkeeper nine minutes later but finally their resistance was broken in the 111th minute, Raemaekers scooping Abu Fani's right-wing corner powerfully into the near side of the goal to provide the opening and ultimately winning goal. Fradi could have stretched their advantage in the final minutes, the pattern of the game remaining the same until the end.
This was the 86th edition of the tournament, Fradi now having triumphed in 25 of them.
