Honvéd join Vasas in celebrating promotion to Fizz Liga
The Fizz Liga, Hungary's top tier of professional football, will feature its capital's five most famous clubs next season after Budapest Honvéd joined city rivals Vasas in securing promotion from the Merkantil Liga.
Honvéd, former club of world stars such as Ferenc Puskás and József Bozsik in the 1950s, have impressed with their blend of youth and experience this season and this has been rewarded with a top-two finish alongside erstwhile division pacesetters Vasas, the former European Cup semi-finalists in 1957/58. Indeed, Honvéd's recent victory over Vasas means that with two points separating the teams and one match remaining, the Merkantil Liga championship title is still to be decided. The pair will join Ferencváros, MTK and Újpest at the top table of Hungarian football, the Fizz Liga due to boast all five of Budapest's biggest clubs for the first time since 2016-17.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the table, Szentlőrinc's win at home to Videoton confirmed the former's survival and, in doing so, condemned Budafok and Békéscsaba to life in the third tier next season.
