Rossi selects 29-man squad for June double-header
The Hungarian men's national squad will have strength in numbers as it prepares for their two international friendly matches in June after head coach Marco Rossi named a 29-man squad. Eight of the players are still eligible for the U21 national team, meaning Marco Rossi has once again selected a number of young, talented prospects.
One change in the stable of goalkeepers compared to the most recent squad in March is the selection of Liverpool's Ármin Pécsi, which means that all three of Liverpool's Hungarians will be in the national squad together once they've arrived after a short break due to the late conclusion of the English Premier League season. In addition to Pécsi, those receiving their maiden call-ups to the full national squad are Ákos Markgráf, Norbert Szendrei, Rajmund Tóth and Bendegúz Kovács.
"As I've said before, this time we will start our preparations with a larger squad, because there are many young players to whom we'd like to give the opportunity to show their capabilities," Rossi told mlsz.hu. "Of course, this doesn't mean that from now on, they will always be members of the squad, because this will be decided by time and their performances, as is the case for everyone else in the squad. I can't yet say whether all 29 players will stay with us until the last day of the camp, since this depends on many factors, including injuries and the physical condition of the players."
Hungary will host Finland on 5th June in the Puskás Aréna and Kazakhstan in Debrecen's Nagyerdei Stadion four days later.
"Our opponents aren't easy this time either," Rossi admitted. "We respect them, but we deliberately didn't choose the very strongest opponents, so that we might have more possession of the ball and create as many attacks as possible. We have to focus on ourselves, on our own style and on what is fundamental to football; to have a stable defence. Both teams are strong. The Finns are tactically flexible, because they can play well with 3, 4 and 5 defenders, who are generally tall and physically tough. Their wingers are fast – although this can be said of Kazakhstan too – and Finland's striker Pohjanpalo is a regular for Palermo in Serie A. The Kazakh national team battles extremely hard, so we will have to perform well against them in order to win. Neither match will be easy, but if we approach these two matches properly, we can be successful.”
Hungary's squad members will start training together on 26th May and will all stay at the national-team training centre in Telki from 1st June.
