Europa League: Fradi come from behind to beat Salzburg
Hungarian champions Ferencváros recovered from a one-goal deficit to win 3-2 at Salzburg in their Europa League third-round match on Thursday night.
Due in large part to the heavy rain and soggy pitch, the pace of the game was unimpressive in the first ten minutes, with both teams undertaking attacks with endeavour but no real threat. That was until Salzburg took the lead almost out of nowhere.
One goal down, Ferencváros changed their game a little, their first well-executed move ending in the award of a penalty for handball. However, Varga's penalty was saved by goalkeeper Schlager from which the home team gained a shortlived boost until Fradi reorganised to strangle their momentum again. Robbie Keane's side created a few promising moves too but the last pass always seemed lacking in quality.
It became an altogether different matter in the second half though, Ferencváros quickly equalising then taking total control of the game by scoring two goals in two minutes, thereby not only turning the game around, but also gaining a significant advantage.
The visitors could have scored more goals too, but they failed to finish any more attacks and instead it was the hosts who scored next, halving the deficit with 18 minutes remaining and ensuring a tense and nervous culmination to the contest.
The Hungarian champions had to concentrate very hard in defence in the final minutes, but ultimately maintained their one-goal lead until the final whistle to achieve an impressive success in Salzburg.
Head coach Robbie Keane's team has now gained seven points after three rounds, which puts them in with an excellent chance of reaching the Europa League's last 16 automatically after the league phase.
