Ferencváros gain draw and away goal in Zagreb
Ferencváros claimed a 1-1 draw at Dinamo Zagreb in their UEFA Men's Champions League third-round qualifier last night, that away goal meaning even a goalless draw against the Croatian champions in the second leg at home next Tuesday would put them through to the play-off stage.
Dinamo started on the front foot and took an eighth-minute lead through Spaniard Dani Olmo, voted the most valuable player at this summer's UEFA Under-21 European Championship. The hosts' grip on the game soon loosened though and Fradi saw more of the ball and created chances too. None were converted though and it was Dinamo who closed the first half in the ascendancy.
Serhiy Rebrov's visitors improved slightly in the second period, at least enough to equalise just before the hour mark when Dinamo goalkeeper Livakovic beat out Nguen's shot and Dávid Sigér was on hand to head the ball over the goal line despite the best efforts of a Zagreb defender. The home side fought hard to regain their lead but Ferencváros stood firm to preserve a potentially very important 1-1 draw ahead of next Tuesday's 2nd leg in the Groupama Aréna in Budapest.
The winner of this tie will play the winner of Rosenborg of Norway and NK Maribor of Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round, while the losers would drop into the Europa League play-offs where they'd face Maccabi Tel-Aviv of Israel or FK Suduva of Lithuania.
