Ferencváros seal 33rd league title

A 2-1 home victory against traditional Budapest rivals Újpest on Sunday evening ensured that Ferencváros will be the 2021/22 Hungarian league champions with four games to spare.

An early Újpest goal from Budu Zivzivadze had threatened to delay Ferencváros' Hungarian title party for another week, but first-half goals by Tokmac Nguen and Bálint Vécsei in this 237th meeting of the two famous clubs established a slender lead which the hosts never relinquished and which ultimated secured Fradi their 33rd Hungarian national league title.

With four rounds left of a 2021/22 season which Ferencváros has dominated, head coach Stanislav Cherchesov's team have 62 points, 13 ahead of Kisvarda in second spot and Puskás Akadémia in third. This latest league title, their fourth in a row, means Ferencváros will enter the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League early next season. The domestic league and cup doube will be sealed if Cherchesov's charges defeat Paks in the MOL Hungarian Cup final in the Puskás Aréna in Budapest on Wednesday 11th May.
