Fradi and Újpest march on in Europe
Budapest clubs Ferencváros and Újpest both recorded secind wins in their respective European ties this week to progress to the next round, but Puskás Akadémia bade farewell to European Conference League participation with a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of their Latvian opponent.
Tuesday evening saw Fradi ease to a routine 3-1 victory over Zalgiris at home, largely thanks to two goals from Ryan Mmaee just before half-time and 18 minutes before the end of the second half. Zalgiris of Lithuania did pull a goal back in the 93rd minute but Ferencváros striker Robert Mak slotted in an even later strike to hand his club a 5-1 aggregate victory and a Champions League 3rd qualifying round tie against Slavia Prague.
Across Budapest, Újpest fans are celebrating home and away success too, their club having defeated Vaduz of Liechtenstein 3-1 in the away leg of their European Conference League. Michael Oenning's side fell behind early on but Tallo's 29th-minute penalty helped settle some nerves and further goals from Beridze and Onovo at either end of the second half secured a 5-2 aggregate success and safe passage into the 3rd qualifying round where they'll face Basel of Switzerland.
One Hungarian club going no further in the Conference League though is Puskás Akadémia, who lost 2-0 away at home against FK Rigas to succumb 5-0 on aggregate.
