Fradi fall to Celtic again in Europa League

After winning in Glasgow two weeks ago, Scottish club Celtic gained three Europa League group-stage points in the Groupama Arena too when they defeated the current Hungarian champions 3-2. This defeat means Ferencváros can no longer avoid finishing in fourth place in group G.

Europa League, Group G, Round 4:

Ferencváros 2-3 Glasgow Celtic (Scotland) (HT: 1-2)

Goalscorers: FTC: Juranovic (11, own goal), Uzuni (86), CEL: Furuhasi (3), Jota (23), Abada (60)

Ferencváros: Bogdán - Somalia, Blazic, S. Mmaee, Civic (Cabrja, 73) - Laidouni, Vécsei (Loncar, 73) - Nguen (R. Mmaee, 67), Zachariassen (Mak, 67), Zubkov (Szánthó, 81) - Uzuni.

Celtic: Hart - Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Welsh (Scales, 89), Juranovic - D. Turnbull, Bitton (McCarthy, 78), C. McGregor - Abada (Forrest, 70), Furuhasi (Jakumakis, 70), Jota (Johnston).

Ferencváros embarked on a promising attack right in the first minute, but Nguen couldn't connect with the ball properly despite being well placed. The hosts would live to regret that miss as the guests took the lead just two minutes later following a huge error in the home defence. It didn’t take Fradi long to equalise though, Zubkov’s goal - which was later attributed to Juranovic as an own goal by UEFA - also requiring a big dose of luck. More luck led to the Scottish visitors regaining the advantage, Jota's shot bouncing off Vécsei's shoulder and into the net. After the first half hour, which had resulted in an extremely high tempo and numerous tough clashes, the game calmed down with no further change in the scoreline before half time.

Both teams hit the crossbar in the early second-half minutes, Nguen being particularly unlucky at the end of one move. In the 58th minute, Blazic kept the Green Eagles alive with some superb defensive work, but Celtic scored from the next attack. Celtic were now understandably in the ascendancy and their coach Ange Postecoglou felt confident enough to replace his excellent attacking trio all at the same time in the 70th minute. Celtic were hoping to see the game out but Uzuni kept home hopes alive with a beautiful late goal, but their would be no dramatic equaliser. Ferencváros will next play away at Spanish club Real Betis in the fifth game of the group stage on 25th November.
