Fradi through to Champions League play-offs but Újpest are out of Europe

Ferencváros' latest impressive European continues as they edge past Slavia Prague 2-1 on aggregate to reach the Champions League play-off stage, but a heavy defeat away at Swiss club Basel means Újpest bow out of the European Conference League at the 3rd qualifying round stage.

The prospect of taking Czech club Slavia Prague was an altogether more daunting one for Fradi than Zalgiris and Prishtina in previous rounds, but Hungary's league champions made light work of that, surging into 2-0 lead by the end of the first leg in Hungary thanks to a Kacharaba own goal just before half time and a Ihor Kharatin penalty early in the second half.

That superb result meant Ferencváros travelled to the Czech capital in confident mood but they were put under heavy pressure for large parts of the contest, during which Masopust scored from a cross to halve the aggregate deficit. Head coach Peter Stöger's visitors held out though, despite the 85th-minute dismissal of Eldar Civic, to seal victory and a play-off against Young Boys of Switzerland to decide which of the two teams will qualify for the group stages of this seaaons UEFA Champions League.

In contrast, Újpest have bid farewell to European football for another year after defeats in both legs of their tie against FC Basel. The Budapest club had taken the lead at home in the first leg but contrived to concede twice and travel to Switzerland needing to overturn  2-1 deficit. That never seemed likely to happen though and two goals in each half resulted in a 4-0 loss on the night and 6-1 on aģgregate.
