Gábor Márton takes the reins at Fehérvár
2019/20 OTP Bank Liga runners-up MOL Fehérvár have announced the club will be replacing departing head coach Joan Carillo with Gábor Márton, the 53-year old's arrival a reward for an excellent spring season with Zalaegerszegi TE.
Former coach Joan Carillo's departure was announced on Monday afternoon and after two days of speculation, MOL Fehérvár held a press conference yesterday where they unveiled the Spaniard's replacement, Gábor Márton (pictured on the right).
As a player, Márton, a former Hungarian Cup winner with Pécsi MFC and league champonship winner with Honvéd, experienced a long and varied career at home and abroad, also representing KRC Genk of Belgium, Cannes of France and several top-tier Israeli clubs amongst others, before bringing an end to his playing career in 2007 having also earned 21 caps and scored one goal for the Hungarian national team.
As a coach, Márton has experience at Hungarian clubs Barcs, Kozármisleny, Kaposvár, Pécs, Siófok and most recently Zalaegerszeg, where he took a newly-promoted team battling against relegation from the OTP Bank Liga up into the mid- and upper reaches of Hungary's top tier, thus achieving safety with several games to spare.
"I am very happy to be the head coach of MOL Fehérvár, but I also know that there is a big task in front of me. A coach works so that sooner or later he or she can lead a team such as Vidi, which is preparing to play on the European stage and at home will fight for the championship title and the Hungarian Cup. The approach came a little unexpectedly, but it has also made me very happy. This offer can't be refused. I look forward to working together (with everyone at the club) and I hope I can grow into the role so we can produce a successful season", Márton commented.
