Gazdag gives Hungary closing win in Warsaw

A goal towards the end of each half from András Schäfer and Dániel Gazdag clinched a 2-1 win for Hungary in their last 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier away against Poland, for whom Karol Swiderski had equalised midway through the second period. Despite this impressive victory, Marco Rossi's team finish in fourth place in their qualifying group behind England, Poland and Albania.

Both sides were missing key men, for this final qualifier of the campaign, Robert Lewandowski missing out for Poland while Hungary's Dominik Szoboszlai headed back to his club RB Leipzig for medical checks on an ankle complaint. Rossi therefore lined up with Dénes Dibusz in goal behind a back three of Attila Fiola, Ádám Lang and Attila Szalai with Loic Nego providing width on the right and Zsolt Nagy doing the same on the left. Further forward, a three-man midfield of Kevin Varga, Ádám Nagy and Dániel Gazdag were tasked with supporting captain Ádám Szalai and Szabolcs Schön upfront.

An even start saw the visitors take the lead in slightly fortunate fashion, a Polish defender inadvertently flicking on an inswinging Zsolt Nagy free-kick and Schäfer pouncing at the back post to head in from barely eight metres out. Poland fought back and were similarly the benificiaries of a loose ball in the Hungary box when Swiderski placed a looping header past Dibusz and into the left corner of the goal on the hour mark.

Hungary snatched victory with 11 minutes remaining though with the best move of the match, Ádám Szalai neatly flicking the ball into Schäfer's path for him to send substitute Tamás Kiss clear down the right wing. His cut-back was controlled by the right foot of Gazdag who then swept the ball high into the top-right corner of the Poland goal and wheeled away in celebration.

Rossi's charges held firm for the rest of the match to ensure three more points could be added to their total, their final record thus being 17 points and five wins from 10 matches. In a highly competitive group, this was enough to finish fourth behind England who qualify automatically for next year's World Cup in Qatar, Poland who take a play-off spot and Albania who finish third.
