Gera: I can't blame the players
Hungary U21's players and head coach Zoltán Gera pointed out after the 3-0 defeat suffered by Germany that constant defence eventually drained the team of energy. “We couldn’t make up the difference, but we’re learning from that,” Gera said.
"We defended well for sixty minutes, we were stable and disciplined," opined goalkeeper Balázs Bese. "Then they broke the ice with their opening goal and from there, their desire to score more shone through, so there was a lot of pressure on us. Their runs were made in dangerous areas and were difficult to prevent. Of course we will analyse the game but we'll have to deal with today's defeat, because we have two more very important matches ahead of us against Romania and Netherlands".
According to László Deutsch, the team managed to implement in the first half what the team discussed. The constant emphasis on defence though, took too much energy from them, so they couldn't switch focus to attack. Germany scored two very similar goals after increasing the tempo in the second half.
"The Germans immediately attacked us very high up the pitch and didn't let us out," Attila Mocsi said. "They were in very good shape and the result came through for them. This momentum ishard to deal with. After the first goal, our game regressed but we battled hard against a very strong team. We’ll look at what we should have done differently, but we’re now already getting ready for the Romania match".
Zoltán Gera also emphasised that the defence and Germany's fast passing took a lot of energy from his team:
“We tired in the second half, but I can’t blame the players because they did everything we asked them to do. We couldn’t make up the difference, but after the match I told the boys to hold their heads high because they may have never played a match of this level before, against players from the Bundesliga and the Champions League. We'll learn from this. We were able to slow them down in the first half, but in the second we couldn’t. We have to watch the match again, but the players did everything they could and foughthard. I missed from our game that when we got the ball, we couldn't lead attacks quickly and couldn't get out, so we didn't create much either, said Gera, whose team was also complimented by his German counterpart. "I see that with us there are those who will be the future of Hungarian football. Romania, meanwhile, drew with Netherlands. We'll have more opportunities to attack against them, so we'll also analyse their game and will prepare accordingly", Gera concluded.
