Gera names new U21 squad for September double-header
Next autumn will see U21 national teams comprised of footballers born after 1st January 2002 compete in the qualifiers for the 2025 U21 European Championship. Hungary coach Zoltán Gera will hold training sessions for this age group from Sunday, and two friendly matches are also included in the group's September schedule.
The Hungary U21 squad didn't make it to the 2023 European Championship tournament finals, but from now, on a new group of players will be eligible and a new Euro qualifying campaign is on the horizon.
Gera announced his new 23-man squad on Thursday, a group which will play two international matches during the first training camp; versus Bulgaria from 17:30 on 23rd September in Szombathely and against Lithuania four days later fro 20:00 on 23 September in the Bozsik Aréna. The squad includes numerous players who have already played as younger members of the U21 team in recent years, while about half of the squad are eligible to play for the U21 national team for the first time.
"With this training camp, the selection process for those born in 2002 and 2003 begins, during which we are looking for the players with whom we can form the most capable squad for the European Championship qualifiers starting a year from now," Gera told mlsz.hu. "We've already worked with a significant part of the squad, so now we want to get to know as much as possible those footballers who have not yet been part of the U21 national team, so we can pass on this knowledge as soon as possible and merge the two age groups which have been in separate national teams until now, into a unified team. I'm glad that, thanks to the association's new rules, a significant number of the invited squad members have been playing regularly in NB I since the beginning of the season, while others are important players for their NB II clubs. In the two upcoming matches, we can assess what the footballers who perform well week after week for their club teams are currently capable of at international level".
