Győr player features in new Hungary Men's squad

ETO FC Győr midfielder Milán Vitális is the new name in Hungary head coach Marco Rossi's latest squad for the two upcoming international friendly matches against Sweden and Azerbaijan next month, but there are also numerous recalls for players who haven't featured in recent times.

Rossi has called up 25 players for June two friendlies, debutant Vitális joining fringe players such as Áron Csongvári, Attila Mocsi and Gábor Szalai on the list, while goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi's recent international retirement has led to a recall for Balázs Tóth after injury.

"We've decided to call up players who've been squad members in the past, but who've not received call-ups most recently," Rossi told mlsz.hu. "One of the reasons for this is that we'll play two friendly matches in this international break, and another is that these players have been in recent good form for their clubs. We'd like to observe them during these two matches and the associated training sessions, but naturally the door to selection is not shut to anyone and always find it important to emphasise this."

"Naturally, those who are called up are always those whose capabilities are relevant, but selection to squads for certain matches also depends on current form, time spent on the pitch and several other factors too."

"This time, the only debutant is Milán Vitális, who - similar to his team - has performed excellently this season in Győr, so it will be interesting to see close-up how he trains, works and plays in the national squad. Furthermore, our only central striker will be Barnabás Varga, because we'd like to see whether or not we're strong enough to play with a false nine (a withdrawn centre-forward, who can also drop into midfield)."

Hungary will first play Sweden, a nation nine places higher in the FIFA world rankings, on 6th June in the Puskás Aréna, before travelling to the city of Baku to face hosts Azerbaijan, in 119th place in those same rankings, four days later.

"The two opponents are different to each other. Sweden are a very strong team with many players who perform in the top leagues at club level," Rossi explained. "We know how good they are, that they generally play with three at the back and that it will be very difficult against them, because they play 1v1 all over the pitch. Azerbaijan are a different type of team, one which isn't as strong as Sweden, but which tends to perform well at home. Of course, our aim there is to win, as it will be against Sweden too, although we'll not necessarily be favourites against the latter."

These two friendly matches represent the last opportunity to prepare for the World Cup qualifiers, which begin in September and there'll be a new face amongst the backroom staff in the form of Simone Rossi.

"The new cycle of World Cup qualifiers starting in autumn will be our first big task, then comes the Nations League group, in which we'd like to fight for promotion back to Division A, and then the qualifiers for the 2028 European Championship." Rossi stated. "There will be all sorts of tasks for our technical staff, which will be expanded by the inclusion of my son Simone, who holds the UEFA 'B' coaching license and a match analysis qualification too. Perhaps I don't need to say that my expectations of him are even higher than those towards the rest of my staff, but I think he's going to make a positive contribution to our staff's work."

Hungary's current national squad members will meet up at the national training centre in Telki on Sunday 1st June 2025.
