Hungarian Cup: Semi-final lineup complete

The second legs of the Hungarian Cup quarter-finals took place this week with Újpest FC, Puskás Akadémia and Balmazújváros joining Debrecen in the last four. The former three all won their ties against MTK, DVTK and Békéscsaba respectively on Wednesday evening, a day after Debrecen had booked their place in the semi-finals with a 3-1 win against Honvéd.

The closest of the four ties had been the one between two of Budapest's most famous clubs, Újpest and MTK, the latter of whom defeated the nine-time champions 3-2 on the night but crashed out due to Újpest having scored more away goals, the aggregate score over the two legs being 4-4. MTK had led at home twice, 1-0 and 3-1, in the second leg but Soma Novothny scored twice for the 'Lilacs' to secure the Megyeri út club's passage to the last four of the competition, where they will face Balmazújváros after the Easter Hungarian team's 2-1 success away at Békéscsaba, the 7-1 aggregate victory largely thanks to their 5-0 first-leg triumph.

Meanwhile, following a home defeat against Diosgyőr, Puskás Akadémia turned their tie around with a comprehensive 3-0 victory away in Miskolc, a goal either side of half-time from Antonio Perovic and Josip Knezevic, swinging the contest in their favour before Ezekiel Henty made sure of progression five minutes from full-time.

Attila Pintér's team will do battle with Debrecen for a place in the final after Norbert Könyves scored twice in Loki's 3-1 second-leg win against Honvéd, a goalless first leg meaning that this turned out to be the aggregate result too.
