Hungarian Cup: Top-flight clubs safely through
Tuesday evening saw the first of the Hungarian Cup's 7th round ties played, Újpest defeating Ajka 5-2, before the rest of Hungary's top-tier clubs completed their ties a day later. All of them progressed, Honvéd with difficulty after extra-time and at the other end of the spectrum, Puskás Akadémia with outstanding ease courtesy of a 15-0 victory.
Capital-city club Újpest struggled initially and Ajka took their chance to move into a lead, Krisztián Nagy converting a rebound after Péter Horváth's shot was kept out. The home side's initial joy only lasted ten minutes, Péter Szakály firing into the top corner to equalise, but debutant Béla Lengyel scored in first-half added time to restore the hosts' lead. The break came at the perfect time for Újpest and they reorganised themselves to the extent that they ran away with the second half, scoring four goals without reply to triumph 5-2 overall.
Every other NB I club also progressed, Fradi overcoming a stubborn BKV Előre, who held firm for a long time and even equalised after falling behind, thanks in part to an own goal which restored their lead and set the foundation for a decisive third goal which confirmed a 3-1 success for Serhiy Rebrov's side.
Elsewhere, County division 1 club Maglód were no match for Puskás Akadémia, the team from Felcsút rattling 15 goals past their less illustrious opponents without reply. ZTE and Paksi managed to find the opponents'nets seven times in their matches but Honvéd were made to sweat in Kazincbarcika, extra-time goals from Batik and Lanzafame needed to prevail after goalless proceedings in normal time.
Kaposvár played a whole half with ten men but still pulled through thanks to a 93rd-minute winner from Richárd Nagy. Gyirmót knocked out Soroksár and Budafok needed penalties to progress after a 1-1 draw with Sopron.
Pápa and Vasas were also unable to be separated after 90 minutes, a 2-2 draw confirming the need for an extra 30 minutes, during which Róbert Rétyi and Ádám Balajti scored to take the Angyalföld club through by virtue of a tense 4-3 victory.
