Hungarian Cup: ZTE recover to join Fehérvár in last eight
The 2020 Hungarian Cup quarter-final lineup is now complete after the return legs of the ninth round were concluded on Wednesday.
Dorog were the first team to confirm their place in the last eight, building on their 4-1 first-leg lead against III. kerület early yesterday afternoon by withstanding first-half pressure then scoring two second-half goals to ease through 6-1 on aggregate.
Fehérvár should have joined them with a handsome victory over Újpest but last season's cup winners missed a host of presentable chances and only ensured their progress with an 89th-minute winner from Visar Musliu following a corner, that goal proving to be the only one scored over the whole tie.
Elsewhere, Puskás Akadémia repeated their 3-0 first-leg away victory by winning by the same scoreline at home against Békéscsaba, thus progressing 6-0 on aggregate. MTK also moved into the last night thanks to victories in both legs, prevailing 2-0 away at Dunaújváros having already posted a 3-0 home success in the first match. Paks beat Pécs by a single goal at home to win 3-1 on aggregate and Mezőkövesd won 3-1 in Kaposvár to complete a 5-2 triumph over the two legs.
Perhaps the performance of the round came in Zalaegerszeg where the hosts made light of a 3-1 first-leg deficit against third-tier Lipóti Pékség, thrashing the team two divsions below them 5-1 to qualify for the quarter-finals by an aggregate scoreline of 6-4.
Honvéd suffered a real scare at the home of opponents' Haladás, András Jancsó levelling the tie for the hosts after Honvéd had won by a single goal in the capital city last week. The match thus went into extra-time and Barna Tóth put Haladás in control when he made it 2-0 for the home team on the night and 2-1 overall. Lovric rescued the team from Kispest in the 100th minute, his goal levelling the tie on aggreate and ultimately sending last season'sbeaten finalists through on away goals.
