Hungary kick off 2026 with two home matches
Marco Rossi's men's national team will play two international home friendlies late in March, the opponents being first Slovenia, then Greece.
Rossi’s charges will face Slovenia on 28th March at 18:00 CET in the Puskás Aréna before returning three days later to play Greece at the same venue at the slightly later time of 19:00.
Greece are currently five places behind 41st-ranked Hungary in the FIFA rankings but their position of 46 should be considered with caution, given a year ago they were among the best 40 teams. Hungary have also experienced recent fluctuations in world ranking at around position 40, so once can reasonably say the two teams will be well matched.
Currently, Slovenia are 57th in the FIFA rankings, but we can be assured of their strength by noting that during the World Cup qualifiers, they drew against group winner Switzerland and this coming autumn they'll play in UEFA Nations League League B, just like Hungary.
"For these March friendlies we were able to choose from teams which are available and, taking this into account, we will meet the strongest possible opponents," Rossi told mlsz.hu. "We would like to see how some of our footballers perform against strong opponents at international level, because our plan is to call up four or five new players to the squad. We are constantly monitoring potential squad members in order to gain a full picture of their current form, taking into account our future options and aìms. Due to the painful result last November, we will have four friendlies now and at the beginning of summer, in which we can test several players, but every time we enter the pitch, we must be aware of whom we are representing and what our goals are, so we can't only be experimenting. We must have a clear idea of how we are building the team, while taking several points of view into consideration. It's great that in March we'll play twice at home in front of our own supporters. I think nobody will have forgotten what happened in November, so we would like to re-strengthen our relationship with our supporters. To do this, the most important is to achieve better results than we had in November. We must start to work again to rebuild our confidence, our faith in ourselves and I don't think we'll have problems with that. At the same time we have to regain the confidence of our supporters. In order to achieve this, our performance on the pitch and our results will help the most, because in football, results are the most important. Anybody can say anything, but without results, there is nothing to talk about. The four friendlies ahead of us are also important from the aspect of the Nations League campaign starting in September, when we will try to return to League A, something which can also be important from the aspect of the next European Championship."
Supporters will soon be informed about ticket sales for the forthcoming matches in the Puskás Aréna.
