Marco Rossi: I am ashamed of our performance
After Hungary's 2-1 World Cup qualifying win against Andorra, head coach Marco Rossi didn't hide his frustration, saying he had expected a much better performance from his team despite the victory.
"After the first half, we thought the match was over because we'd played very well in the first period," Rossi said as he began his assessment. “But after half an hour, we started playing football as if we had forgotten what had happened to us against England. The team seemed to have forgotten what we had been discussing, the players started to play as individuals and there were too many unforced errors in our game. We need to restore our self-confidence, we need to be more aggressive and we need to win more battles. We cannot be suffering against Andorra. We need to work and improve because we can’t deliver such performances as we have in some periods of today’s match, especially in the second half. You can’t get inside the penalty area four or five times and not get a shot on goal. We made too many mistakes within the opponent’s penalty area, which makes us feel embarrassed.
It needs to be clarified who is willing to carry out my instructions, because if someone does not do what I expect, either tactically or in terms of attitude, they will not be a member of the squad. In the last fifteen minutes, we had to worry that Andorra would not score a goal. This is unacceptable. A whole different attitude was needed, and not so long ago we proved we were capable of that. Unfortunately, if our national team doesn’t give the maximum, we have to put our hands together to pray that Andorra doesn’t score a goal at the end. For today’s performance, I am ashamed of myself in front of the 50,000 fans who came at the stadium".
On the other hand, Andorra coach Koldo Álvarez praised his team after the game: "In the first twenty minutes we could not put a glove on them, but in the remaining seventy minutes we were the equal of the Hungarians. It only came down to fine details that we won't be leaving Budapest with a point. Tonight, my team performed exceptionally well, so they deserve top marks from me. I'm glad that we were a worthy opponent of a national team which performed very well in the European Championship and I'm sorry that our other goal was disallowed by the referee".
