Marco Rossi: We need to keep our feet on the ground

Hungary's Italian head coach would have taken a draw before the match against Poland, but in the end there was disappointment at only taking one point from our first World Cup qualifier.

"Honestly, I would have signed for the draw before the match, but having watched it all from the bench, the loss of points now hurts," Rossi began his assessment of Hungary's first FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.

"If we hadn't made big mistakes once in a two-goal lead, we could have secured the three points and then again we could even have won 3-2. Even after the two Poland goals, we were able to put pressure on the opponent and regain the advantage, but we made another serious mistake near the end. I’ve been whining to players all week that if we need to pay attention to anything, it’s Robert Lewandowski, who should never be overlooked, yet we did. We’ve played with the team ranked 19th in the world and we have to admit that we’re not on the same level as them yet.

There are some really class players in the Poland lineup and thanks to them, they gained a point. I’m glad we took the lead at the beginning of the match from a situation which we've practised a lot in training, but after that we defended a bit too deeply and allowed the Polish players to have too much possession of the ball. Our attackers and defenders played well, but we could have done more in midfield, especially Zsolt Kalmár, from whom I expected more in the first half. With better ball possession, we could have served our forwards more effectively.

It's important for the team to keep both feet on the ground and set realistic expectations. Now there are two difficult matches against San Marino and Andorra, from which we definitely need to score six points".
