Men's U21s sweep past Azerbaijan

Zoltán Gera's team has played three matches since the new age-group of Under-21 players in the summer, winning all three without conceding a goal.

Two of those matches came in September with 1-0 defeats of Bulgaria and Lithuania and the third came now with a comprehensive 3-0 success against Azerbaijan in Turkey.

Zoltán Gera's starting team included several players who hadn't been part of the squad in September, Zalán Vancsa, Márk Kosznovszky and Márió Simut all taking their places on the pitch for the starting whistle.

Hungary dominated the first half, the game taking place almost exclusively in the opponent's half but for all the possession, there wasn't quite enough incisiveness to break through the opposing defence.

However, the second half quickly brought the opening goal when, in the 47th minute, Dániel Németh was scythed down inside the penalty area, and the resultant penalty was confidently slotted into the net by captain Botond Balogh. Hungary's superiority remained in place after the first goal and opportunities were created one after the other.

In the 67th minute, Mátyás Kovács, who had come on as a substitute, placed a shot into the lower-right corner of the Azeri goal from a tight angle and 15 minutes later the final score was set when Dominik Kocsis' cross from the right was headed in by another substitute Milán Vitalís for Hungary's third and final goal.

"We started the match well and it seemed the players were enjoying the game. We created chances, but the final passes weren't really good and we didn't pick them up well enough to score. However, even then, I liked the structure of our game, the way we got the balls out wide and got into the opponent's penalty area. Even after the break we played with great energy and then we managed to score a goal which relaxed the team. We kept creating chances, scored goals, and in the end fully deserved the win. I'm glad we were able to try out new players and that we're managing to continue to build our team," Gera said after the match.

Attention now turns to the last day of the training camp on Sunday afternoon, when Gera's team will play a warm-up match against Denmark.
