MOL Hungarian Cup draw: Hungary's top two clubs may meet
The 8th round of the MOL Hungarian Cup will be held on 10th February, but the teams have already learned about the draw for the following two rounds. If Ferencváros defeat Dorog in the 8th round, they will play the winner of the Vasas vs MOL Fehérvár tie.
The domestic competition calendar will be extremely busy in the spring season, given that the OTP Bank Liga and MOL Hungarian Cup campaigns will end on 8th May, the Cup's 8th and 9th rounds will be close enough to each other to necessitate the draws for rounds 9 and 10 being made now at the same time.
As we approach Round 8, all 12 OTP Bank League teams are still in contention for glory and once again they all play against a lower-division rival so they could all advance to the last 16. Only Tarpa SC and Dunavarsány remain from Hungary's county-level leagues, added to which there are five national third-tier clubs (Tiszafüred, Tállya, Taksony, III. District TVE and Hódmezővásárhely) and 14 from the Merkantil Bank Liga (Hungary's second tier).
The draw was conducted live on television at the M4 Sport studios by former Hungarian national-team captain János Bánfi, a Hungarian Cup winner in his playing days with both Békéscsaba and Honvéd.
The biggest prospective tie in the round of 16 could be Ferencváros against MOL Fehérvár, last year's OTP Bank Liga winners and runners-up respectively if the former can defeat Dorog and the latter can overcome Vasas, both of the Merkantila Liga.
Round 9 (round of 16):
1. Csákvár – Paks / Dunavarsány – Budafok
2. Dorog – FTC / Vasas – MOL Fehérvár FC
3. PMFC – Haladás / Soroksár – Kisvárda
4. Ajka – Mezőkövesd / Tarpa – DVTK
5. Tiszafüred – ZTE / III. ker. TVE – Budapest Honvéd
6. Tállya – Kaposvár / Kazincbarcika – MTK
7. Hódmezővásárhely – Puskás Academy / Szolnok – Újpest FC
8. DEAC – DVSC / Taksony – Siófok
Round 10 (Quarter-finals):
Dorog-FTC / Vasas-MOL Fehérvár FC - Csákvár-Paks / Dunavarsány-Budafok
Ajka-Mezőkövesd / Tarpa-DVTK - Hódmezővásárhely-Puskás Academy / Szolnok-Újpest FC
PMFC – Haladás / Soroksár – Kisvárda - Tiszafüred – ZTE / III. ker. TVE – Budapest Honvéd
Tállya – Kaposvár / Kazincbarcika – MTK - DEAC – DVSC / Taksony – Siófok
Progression is decided over just one match in each round. In all cases, the lower division team will be the host, while for teams in the same division as each other, the team that has played fewer matches at home will use its own pitch. If that number is the same for both sides, the team drawn first will play at home.
