NBI clubs avoid any early Hungarian Cup upsets
Ferencváros needed an added-time winner away at third-tier club Dunaharaszti MTK to progress past the first round proper of this season's Hungarian Cup but in the end there were no surprise defeats for any top-flight club at this stage of the competition.
The visitors fashioned few chances throughout the game and Dunaharaszti matched their more illustrious opponents all the way in terms of spirit and desire. Indeed, the hosts had the best chance of the first half when visiting goalkeeper Ádám Holczer passed the ball straight to home-team forward Bence Szenes, but he could only shoot centrimetres wide of the left post from 16 metres out.
Fradi placed their opponents from NBIII under much more pressure in the second period and were rewarded with the opening goal from the head of Endre Botka, but the hosts maintained their efforts and snatched a late equaliser when Gergő Vitányi nodded down a corner and Dániel Mészáros swivelled and shot into the net from eight metres to restore parity.
However, the real drama was still to come as Fradi got out of jail in the 92nd minute, Bognár making his second assist of the match by supplying a cross for Leandro who had moved forward from the back to head in and secure Ferencváros' passage to the next round.
Elsewhere on Tuesday evening, Diosgyőr went 2-0 up inside 10 minutes away at third-tier team Veszprém, eventually winning the tie by three unanswered goals. There were ten ties involving top-tier Hungarian sides on Wednesday and no surprises, Debrecen grabbing the headlines with an eye-catching 10-1 victory over county league Csongrád TSE.
