New Bozsik Aréna is inaugurated
Budapest Honvéd's home for the past century has been fully rebuilt and modernised, and opened with a gala friendly match between the hosts and Spanish club Villareal B on Sunday afternoon.
The match would have originally been contested by Villarreal's first team, but two positive COVID tests on Friday meant the club could only send their reserve team to Budapest instead. The kick-off was performed by Ferenc Puskás' great-granddaughter, Ane De Juan Damboera, and Péter Bozsik, son of the stadium's eponym József Bozsik, while former footballer Antal Bárfy, the oldest surviving league title winner in Honvéd colours also took part in the inauguration ceremony.
A parachutist delivered the ball to the stadium for the match and before the opening whistle a children's choir sang the Hungarian national anthem, with three-quarters of the stadium occupied. Honvéd defender Djordje Kamber, who retired at the end of last season, was on the pitch for the first ten minutes of the game and was given a rousing farewell when leaving the pitch. Kamber remains employed by the Kispest club as a coach.
The demolition of the old Kispest stadium began in mid-February 2019 and a month later the ceremonial foundation stone of the new one was laid. The state-of-the-art facility, whose immediate surroundings have completely changed, was completed this spring; in March, at the U21 European Championships jointly hosted by Hungary, it hosted three group matches and then another one of the knockout matches in late May-early June.
After 1084 days, Budapest Honvéd were again able to play a match in their own stadium in Kispest. On 5th August 2018, Paks were hosted here in the OTP Bank Liga, but since then, Honvéd has mainly played at their temporary home of MTK's Új Hidegkuti Nándor Stadium. However, from the 2021/22 season, the club will again host matches in Kispest, starting with their first home game of the new league season against newly-promoted Debreceni VSC.
