New Hungary kit unveiled at national-team press conference
The Hungarian Football Federation has unveiled its new adidas national-team kit during a press conference at the Puskás Aréna ahead of the new stadium's inaugural match against Uruguay on Friday and the crucial Euro 2020 Qualifier against Wales four days later.
The new kit has been made for the 2020 European Championship, the main concept behind the design being the combination of art and football, which in practice means the design elements were inspired by the shared passions and emotions of fans and players.
“It was a unique challenge to design a jersey which successfully conveys the raw emotions of football and their unifying power. At the beginning of the creative process, we focused on sketches, which allowed us to be more human and emotional in expressing what we create. We’re pleased with the end result because we believe that the combination of art and football has been a success”, commented senior adidas designer Jürgen Rank.
It is the first time the Hungarian national team jersey has been categorised alongside the Belgian, Spanish and German national team ones, which means that it is not a generic template but has individually-designed elements which cannot be adapted to other adidas jerseys. The colours reflect the national flag, whilst its pattern and flowing effects are inspired by the River Danube. The reference to Budapest is due to the city being one of the twelve host cities at EURO 2020. The country's name in Hungary, 'Magyarország', can be found on the back of the neck. For the sake of sustainability, the jersey is made from 100% recycled polyester, whilst its production technology ensures heat and air permeability to meet the demands of the modern age.
The new kit will be worn for the first time by the Hungarian national team in the Puskás Aréna's opening match against Uruguay on 15th November and will be available for sale at the stadium. You can order yours now from the Hungarian Football Federation webshop.
During the second part of the press conference, Hungary head coach Marco Rossi and players Balázs Dzsudzsák and Dominik Szoboszlai answered journalists’ questions.
“The two matches before us will be special occasions for different reasons. I would have loved to have been playing our decisive qualifying match at the Puskás Aréna but unfortunately, we didn’t have a say in the matter. Uruguay are a team full of world-class players. Friday will be an historic occasion and we’d like to play our part”, said Rossi. Turning his attention to the Wales match, Rossi went on to add that: “We’re not looking great in defence. Tamás Kádár is injured, Mihály Korhut is suspended, and I don’t have a crystal ball when it comes to knowing what shape Willi Orban’s knee will be in. We’re down to the bare bones but I have full trust in all my players. We know Wales’ strengths and weaknesses and we’ll prepare thoroughly for them; we’ll be fine-tuning ourselves for the match”.
As regards Friday’s match, Rossi added that although the match is also a farewell game for Zoltán Gera, given that the 97-times capped midfielder retired from the game a year ago and isn’t match-fit, they decided together that Gera would not play against Uruguay. The current Under-21 head coach will be bid farewell before kick-off on Friday and the team will dedicate the match to him.
Balázs Dzsudzsák and Dominik Szoboszlai spoke of the huge honour it will be to play at the new Puskás Aréna, but that next week’s match against Wales is already in their minds.
“The stadium leaves a huge impression; the venue is bursting with energy. We’re exceedingly proud to follow in the footsteps of the greats and be able to play here (on the same site as the old stadium). I’m lucky that fortune has provided me with this opportunity. It will be one of the elite stadiums in the world and I’m sure that next week we’ll succeed in securing a place among the European footballing elite”, said Dzsudzsák.
“It’ll be an amazing experience to play in this stadium as a 19-year-old," added Szoboszlai. "You can’t describe the atmosphere of the place; you must feel it and see it for yourself. I went out onto the pitch a few minutes ago and it was an indescribable feeling even with the stands empty so it’ll be spine-tingling to play in front of a full house here. We’re primarily preparing for the Uruguay match but it’s true that the Wales match is already on our minds”, the FC Salzburg midfielder concluded.
