Novothny stars for Újpest and leaders Vidi falter again

There were three home successes in the OTP Liga's 10th round this weekend as only Újpest managed to travel away and take all three points, largely thanks to Soma Novothny's second-half hat-trick against Mezőkövesd. Elsewhere, last season's top two teams Honvéd and Videoton shared a 1-1 draw while Vasas' clash with Haladás was abandoned in the 22nd minute due to floodlight failure.

Ferencváros 2-0 Diósgyőr (HT: 0-0) (lead photo features these two teams in this match)
Goalscorers: FTC: Varga R. (62.), Spirovski (71.)

Ferencváros were the team on the front foot in the first half but they weren't able to breach a stoic Diosgyőr defence. That all changed in the second half though, the visitors enjoying more possession but conceding just after the hour mark when goalkeeper Ivan Rados could only help an effort from Fradi's Hungarian international winger Roland Varga into his own net for the latter's 11th goal of the season. Nine minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead through Stefan Spirovski and 2-0 is how the match finished, Ferencváros gaining their third league win in a row while Diosgyőr suffered their third straight league defeat.

Debreceni VSC 3-0 Puskás Akadémia FC (1-0)
Goalscorers: DEB: Varga K. (45.), Könyves (82.), Tőzsér (86.)

The spectators present looked set to be deprived of any first-half goals in Easter Hungary but Kevin Varga made sure that didn't happen, his completion of a nice team move putting Loki one goal up on the stroke of half-time. Puskás Akadémia stepped up the pace after the break but couldn't create any clear chances, in contrast to the hosts who extended their advantage in the last ten minutes through Norbert Könyves and Dániel Tőzsér to secure their fifth league victory in a row.

Paksi FC 1-0 Balmaz Kamilla Gyógyfürdő (1-0)
Goalscorers: PAK: Kulcsár D. (36.)

A scrappy nature was a theme of this match throughout, though Paks just shaded it in terms of productivity, their only real opportunity converted by Kulcsár in the 36th minute to hand them a somewhat unexpected lead. Balmazújváros were more adventurous in the second half but produced little of real worth and in fact it was Paks who came closest to scoring again from a free-kick. The hosts therefore took all three points and condemned the visitors to their sixth straight match without a win, only one point being gained in that time since starting their first ever top-flight season.

Mezőkövesd 2-4 Zsóry-Újpest FC (1-0)
Goalscorers: MEZ: Cseri (28.), Fótyik (84.), ÚJP: Tischler (60.), Novothny (62., 79., 86. pen.)

Újpest were the more ambitious team at the beginning of the first half and saw a goal chalked off for offside but Mezőkövesd soon came back at them and actually took a 28th-minute lead through Tamás Cseri's controlled half-volley. The home side nearly extended their lead five minutes before the break but Filip Pajovic's strike was ruled out for offside, but a one-goal half-time lead was still just reward for their dominance. Újpest coach Neboja Vignjevic brought on Obinna Nwobodo at the interval and Patrik Tischler early in the second half, the latter restoring parity with a header from a right-wing corner on the hour mark and the former crossing from the left two minutes later to set up striker Soma Novothny for the visitors' second goal. The momentum was now clearly with the Budapest club and Novothny seemingly made the game safe with his second goal in the 79th minute, only for Dániel Nagy to miss a penalty and Dominik Fótyik to halve the deficit for Mezőkövesd. Fittingly though, it was Novothny who had the last word with the successful conversion of a second spotkick to complete his hat-trick and confirm an ultimately comfortable win for Újpest and spell more trouble for Mezőkövesd - the home side are now eight league matches without a win.

Videoton FC 1-1 Budapest Honvéd FC (1-1)
Goalscorers: VID: Hadzic (3.), HON: Holender (40.)

These two teams were meeting for the first time since last season's title decider and it was Vidi, at their temporary home of the Pancho Aréna in Felcsút, who exploded out of the blocks, Hadzic's precise finish putting the hosts ahead in just the third minute. They continued to dominate the opening exchanges but although Secpovic hit the woodwork, they couldn't extend their advantange. Instead, it was Honvéd who edged their way back into the game and levelled matters through Filip Holender's accurate effort from outside the penalty area. Both sides pressed to win the game in the second period but there was change in the scoreline so both had to settle for a point at the end.
