Opportunities for returnees in Rossi's latest squad

Bálint Vécsei and Zsolt Nagy both return to the international scene after long absences, while Filip Holender and Loic Nego are both back in the squad after missing the October rounds of FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Injuries to key men influenced the composition of the men’s national squad for October's World Cup qualifiers, Hungary head coach Marco Rossi being unable to count on several important midfielders and attackers. Now, Zsolt Nagy and Bálint Vécsei have received call-ups and two European Championship participants who have been missing since September, Filip Holender and Loic Nego, will also return to the squad.

It has been known since September that Kevin Varga would not be able to play for many weeks due to an ankle injury and since then Ádám Szalai has suffered a knee injury which was operated on last week. Gergő Lovrencsics is also sidelined with a heel problem, meaning that Rossi's staff are shorn of three regular squad members for the World Cup qualifiers against Albania at home and away against England.

However, Loic Nego and Filip Holender do return to the squad having recovered from coronavirus infections in September. Zsolt Nagy, who was last in the national team squad in 2019, has been recalled by Rossi, the latter also giving Bálint Vécsei a chance to impress again, seven years after last featuring in his debut against Albania in 2014.

"We have two very important matches ahead of us, and although we have a lot of difficulties to deal with, we definitely want to improve after the defeat in Albania and to prove against England that we're much better than our performance in Budapest against the European Championship finalists," Rossi told mlsz.hu. "However, this requires each player to fight from the first to the last breath on the pitch and to play to the best of his ability!"
