OTP Bank Liga: Újpest spoil Paks's stadium party
Újpest put a dampener on Paks's new stadium inauguration at the weekend thanks to two goals from attacking midfielder Krisztián Simon.
Former Hungarian national-team coach Imre Gellei represented MLSZ at Paks's inauguration of their refurbished stadium and emphasised how Paks is currently the only top-flight club with a club consisting only of Hungarian players, as well as paying tribute to those that have worked on the stadium becoming an impressive, modern football venue. Nevertheless, it was Újpest who impressed most on the pitch in the first half, taking the lead when Simon dispatched a rebound after he'd struck the crossbar with a clever lob in the 17th minute. The second half also largely belonged to the visitors, Simon doubling the capital-city club's lead just after the hour mark and although Martin Ádám halved the deficit, that was as good as it got for the hosts in their new surroundings.
Elsewhere, Zalaegerszeg took the lead twice against last season's runners-up MOL Fehérvár, for whom their head coach Gábor Márton was making his debut having moved from Zala in the summer. Fehérvár recovered well though and took a 61st-minute lead through Nemanja Nikolic, only for Babati to score his second goal of the game -this time from the penalty spot - and secure a point for the home team. The only home victory from Saturday's three matches came in Miskolc where Diósgyőr defeated Mezőkövesd 2-1 thanks to two early goals from Iszlai and Drazic. The Puskás Akadémia-Honvéd match was postponed and will be played at a later date.
