Prolific Hahn joins Euro qualifying heroes in Rossi's latest squad
The spine of Marco Rossi’s provisional squad for the European Championship this summer is comprised of the players who were the architects of the squad's successes in 2020. In addition, however, there will also be opportunities for players who have earned an international call-up through their performances over the current season.
In addition to the players who secured qualification for the UEFA European Championship, a call-up for János Hahn, who leads the OTP Bank Liga goalscoring standings, had already been announced by head coach Marco Rossi, At the same time, Szabolcs Schön, who was impressive for MTK before a recent move to FC Dallas in the United States, and 20-times capped goalkeeper Ádám Bogdán, who has starred for Ferencváros recently, will return to the squad.
“As I’ve said several times in the past, I’m mainly counting on the players who took the lion’s share of responsibility for taking us to the European Championship and to promotion in the Nations League,” Marco Rossi explained. "At the same time, it was also important that most of them were playing regularly for their clubs. The only exception is Dominik Szoboszlai, who has not played since his move to Leipzig in January, but who is currently our number-one talent, and is therefore one of the key players for the national team. If he's in good condition by 1st June, I will expect him to be in the tournament squad too. If not, however, we will be forced to release him back to his club".

National-squad members from the OTP Bank Liga whose club duties will have already ended will start their preparations in Telki on 17th May. The full squad will be at training camps in Austria for 10 days from 24th May before returning for warm-up internationals on 4th June against Cyprus and on 8th June against Ireland at the Szusza Ferenc Stadion in Budapest. This will be the first time since Marco Rossi’s appointment that his squad can spend this much time together in one unbroken period.
“Our most important task is to keep the players in shape, but at the same time we have to take into account that a full season is now coming to an end, during which most players have had a heavy workload,” Rossi continued. “That’s why it’s a special challenge to keep them physically fit, but also to not overload them. In Austria, there will probably be a little more emphasis on physical activity, but basically the emphasis will be on tactics, improving organisation and building routines as much as possible during training. We also want to further improve team unity, which is already excellent, but like everything, can always be enhanced. By the end of the training camp in Austria, I have to select the 26 players I will counting on in the European Championship, meaning that three outfield players and and one goalkeeper from the current squad won't be able to stay with us for our group matches against the best teams in the world".
On 15th June, Hungary will start its European Championship campaign against reigning champions Portugal in the Puskás Arena. Four days later, Rossi's men will take on reigning world champions France in the same stadium before travelling to Munich to face 2014 World Cup winners Germany in the Allianz Arena on 23rd June.
