Rebrov glad Fradi's Hungarians are gaining Champions League experience
The pre-match press conferences have taken place ahead of the Ferencváros-Barcelona Champions League match on Wednesday and according to Fradi's head coach, his players now know what it takes to be able to perform at European level.
Ferencváros started their Champions League group away in Barcelona, and although they kept the game tight for a long time, they eventually conceded twice late on and succumbed 5-1 one in the famous Nou Camp stadium. The two teams will meet again in the Puskás Arena on Wednesday evening. Serhiy Rebrov, head coach of Ferencváros, once again stressed that a high level of performance in Champions League matches requires special experience, which in turn can only be gained in the Champions League.
“The Champions League needs a special kind of experience, but I think we’ve had the right experience against the best in the world in recent weeks. It will benefit us all, and can give players confidence," Rebrov began. "The most important thing is to be competitive at this level; it's more important than the result. We have seen that we can create chances, for example, against Juventus recently. The experience gained during our Europa League performance last year helped a lot with our development, because the players were able to learn what it takes to be able to play football at European level. I am especially glad that we can see 3 or 4 Hungarian players in the starting line-up for Champions League matches. They are not members of the team because they are Hungarian, but because they are competitive at this level, and they also perform well for the national team. I am glad that development is clearly visible in their case as well, which is something which can fill Ferencváros and Hungary with pride".
Meanwhile, Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman began his press conference by explaining why three key players, Lionel Messi, Philippe Coutinho and Marc-André ter Stegen, hadn't travelled with the team.
"I know it's not best to rest Lionel Mess for two games, but our progress was confirmed in the last match in Kiev, and an important league fixture awaits us this weekend. Regardless, Wednesday will also be an important match. It is important to give other players the opportunity to prove themselves, as one of our goals is to win the Spanish league" admitted Koeman, who feels that his players won't have an easy time against the Hungarian champions.
"I'm expecting a difficult match against Ferencváros. We met at the opening of the group stage in Barcelona, so we have experience of them, but we also saw their last match against Juventus, where the Hungarian team played and defended well, thanks to which they had a chance to score points right until the last few minutes. Fradi has fast players, quality footballers who can surprise us at any minute, so I made sure to draw the attention of my footballers to this. They have very good energy, which has been proven before against Dynamo Kiev", Koeman told www.fradi.hu.
