Roland Varga snatches famous win for Fradi in Moscow
Substitute Roland Varga scored a goal with one of his first touches in the 86th minute to seal a sensational three points for Ferencváros over CSKA Moscow on the third matchday of the UEFA Europa League's group stage on Thursday.
After a sedate first quarter, the game sprung into life when Ferencváros goalkeeper Dibusz was forced to make his first big save, after which the hosts almost took the lead from a corner. The reigning Hungarian champions nearly edged in front soon afterwards though, Tokmac Nguen controlling a forward pass superbly but then striking the ball just past the left post.
Before the break, it was certainly the Muscovites who were in control overall, often with 7-8 white Fradi jerseys to be found inside or around their own penalty area. Ahmetov went close for CSKA in the 23rd minute and Vlasic posed danger from a counter-attack before Sigurdsson had the last chance of the half. Dénes Dibusz was in great form though.
The game slowed down in the first fifteen minutes of the second half but still Dibusz was called upon twice to make saves. Ferencváros went close with a shot from Sigér, as did the hosts with yet another good chance.
CSKA pressed forward ever harder but failed to find the breakthrough and instead they were caught with a sucker punch. Two substitutes, Isael and Roland Varga, were heavily involved, the former latching on to Sigér's pass and drawing a block from veteren goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev before Zubkov squared the ball to Varga who tapped it into the empty goal. This strike in the 86th minute determined the destiny of the three points.
This was Ferencváros' first win in the group stages of a major European tournament for nearly 15 years, since a 1-0 win away at Scottish club Hearts in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup. The first two matchdays of this current campaign had seen Serhiy Rebrov's team play out a 1-1 draw away against Espanyol then suffer a 3-0 defeat at home to Bulgarian club Ludogorec.
Ferencváros and CSKA will clash again on the next matchday, this time in the Groupama Aréna on November 7th.
In the other match in Group H, Espanyol (7 points) won 1-0 away at Ludogorec (6 points) and lead the group. Ferencváros are third with four points.
