Thrills and big wins in the men's Hungarian Cup

MTK and Puskás Akadémia seized three-goal advantages after the first legs of the Hungarian Cup round of 16 while three other clubs recovered from deficits to secure leads ahead of their second legs next week. In the shock of this week, top-tier side Zalaegerszeg crashed 3-1 away at third-division Lipót.

Zalaegerszeg are winless in the league so far this calendar year and so far, the change of coach at the start of this week has had no discernible effect, the Zala side now led by Gábor Márton suffering a 3-1 defeat away at third-tier team Lipót, whose former NB I striker Zoltán Harsányi opened the scoring early on. They retained this lead into the second half and six minutes after Zalaegerszeg's Dávid Barczi was sent off, the hosts doubled their advantage through Csete in the 57th minute. Four minutes later, Stjepan Ostrek halved the deficit but Zimonyi's 76th-minute strike ensured a 3-1 success.

Elsewhere, Paks went behind at third-division Pécs but Tamás Kecskés and Máté Sajbán's goals turned the match on its head and handed the visitors a 2-1 triumph, that despite Pécs being awarded penalties at 1-0 up and 2-1 down, both of which were missed.

The third of these early-afternoon kick-offs saw second-tier Dorog justify the difference in division between themselves and third-level III.kerület, winning 4-1 despite having fallen a goal behind from the penalty spot as early as in the fourth minute.

Kaposvár took a 66th-minute lead through Martin Ádám against Mezőkövesd but the hosts hit back with late goals from Pillár and Cseri to snatch the win. Meanwhile, both MTK Budapest and Puskás Akadémia have effectively decided their ties after prevailing 3-0 against Dunaújváros and Békéscsaba respectively. In the biggest tie of the round, Újpest and MOL Fehérvár played out a goalless draw in the former club's temporary home of Szeged.

Finally, Honvéd struggled to a single-goal victory away at Haladás thanks to Kukoc's 57th-minute goal but a meleé involving multiple players and coaches at the end of the match televised by M4 Sport will now be investigated by MLSZ.
