U17 World Cup: Hungary aiming to take last chance
The Hungarian men's national team will play its final group match at the U17 World Cup in Brazil at 21:00 CET on Friday. A victory would guarantee qualification to the knockout stages but this is really is the last chance to stay in the tournament.
Hungary were in winning positions against both Nigeria and Australia at the end of the first half, but in the second half the former turned the match around, while the latter recovered from two down to equalise. This means we have one point after two matches and thus need to win against Ecuador to progress in second place in the group.
It was on arrival in Brazil that our delegation got their first impressions of the South Americans because the two teams are staying in the same hotel, so players see each other every day. Hungary then saw the second half of Ecuador's second game live in the stadium, and the squad have also received video analysis of their opponents, which has been compiled by their backroom staff.
"Ecuador has a strong, organised team with very fast, individually-capable forwards. Even so, we believe in ourselves and we know that we are able to reach our goal and move on from the group with a win on Friday. However, for this, we need to improve, especially in our forward play, and if we can play for the whole match in the same way we played in our first halves against Nigeria and Australia, then we can get the three points. We've two disappointing results behind us but we're just looking ahead and focusing on playing as well as we can on Friday afternoon", team captain Patrik Posztobányi told MLSZ.hu.
After a regeneration day on Wednesday, head coach Sándor Preisinger's squad practised tactics for the forthcoming contest against Ecuador on Thursday albeit in the midst of heavy rainfall, so everyone involved was soaking wet to the skin within minutes. Ákos Zuigeber is out of the tournaent after suffering a fractured leg in the first half of the match against Australia and Zetény Hosszú missed the training session, but he is expected to be available for Friday evening's match.
It is expected to be 34-35 degrees celsius in Gioania on Friday so the teams will play in fairly difficult conditions from 17.00 local time.
