UEFA Europa League final to be held in Budapest in 2022
Hungarian football has achieved another success in sports diplomacy by securing the hosting rights to the 2022 UEFA Europa League final in the Puskas Arena. Sándor Csányi, MLSZ president, said he is confident that the Europa League final would inspire many of Hungary's chidren to fall in love with the sport.
At this week's meeting in Amsterdam, the UEFA Executive Committee decided to award the right to host the final of the Europa League in 2022 to the Puskás Arena, a stadium inaugurated just last November and with a capacity of more than 60,000 people. Today's decision is of historical importance to the sport, because there has never been a single-match final in any men's international football tournament in the country.
The call for tenders was received by national associations on 31 May 2019 and requests for proposals on 5 July. The application deadline was 28 October 2019. During the preparation of the application, the association cooperated with various levels of government, the leadership of the Puskás Arena, Budapest's local government and representatives of transport companies, hotels and tourism operators. The scheduled date for the Europa League final is May 18 or May 25, 2022.
"I feel it is a strong confirmation of our work that Hungary is trusted to host outstanding football matches every year, starting with last year's Women's Champions League final, continuing with this year's European Championshipand next year's U21 European Championship and, as confirmed by today's decision, the Europa League final too", Sándor Csányi, MLSZ president, told mlsz.hu following the news. "Thanks to this, more and more Hungarian fans can watch outstanding football matches in their home country. I trust that the upcoming Europa League final will be a big match that will help lots more young children to love football".
Thanks to the federation's successes in sport diplomacy, Hungary has won the right to host a number of prestigious European football events in recent years: in 2019, the Women's Champions League final was held in Budapest, this year we will co-host the Men's European Championship and then the U21 edition in 2021. The Europa League final will follow in 2022.
