Vasas promoted to OTP Bank Liga
One of Budapest's traditional giants Vasas has succeeded in reclaiming their place in Hungarian men's football's top tier after a four-year absence without even needing to kick a ball on Sunday.
Vasas' nearest challenger at the top of Hungary's 2nd tier, the Merkantil Liga, are Kecskemét (pictured) and they posted a dominant victory away at Dorog, but the other team capable of catching Vasas had been Diosgyőr, who had games in hand in 3rd place with only the top two teams able to claim a promotion spot.
However, the club from Miskolc suffered an unexpected defeat at Budaörs to extinguish any hopes they had of catching Vasas and leave them three points behind second-placed Kecskemét with three matches remaining of the 2021/22 season. Vasas, led by former Mezőkövesd coach Attila Kuttor, are top on 78 points from 34 games, with Kecskemét on 68 from 35 matches and Diosgyőr on 65 from 35.
