István Magyar is 65 years old today
István Magyar, former Hungarian champion, domestic cup winner and 16-time Hungarian international, celebrates his 65th birthday today.
Magyar was born in Tiszapüspök and signed for Ferencváros from Szolnoki Vegyiművek in season 1971–1972, taking his place in the first-team squad along with a wave of other young talent under the guidance of head coach Jenő Dalnoki. In October 1973, he made his top-flight debut against Videoton and was a member of Fradi's Hungarian Cup-winning team in 1974, 1976 and 1978. The year of 1976 saw him claim the Hungarian league title with the Green Eagles, a year after he'd help the club reach the European Cup Winners Cup final in 1974-1975. In 1977, Magyar won the Géza Toldi Award for the best Ferencváros player that season.
The attack-minded Magyar defected in the summer of 1979 and after a one-year ban he resumed his career, first at FC Bruges and then at Austria Vienna. Together with fellow Hungarian Tibor Nyilasi, he won the Austrian championship with the Viennese purple-and-whites in 1984.
Magyar made his international debut against Bulgaria in 1975 and was part of a great victory against Argentina in the Népstadion in early 1976, but he fell out of favour a year later on the South American tour, after a severe defeat against the same opponent. He returned to the national team for two more matches in 1979, but his foreign exile ended his national team career. He scored one goal in sixteen matches, against Austria in the Népstadion.
After his stint with Austria Vienna, Magyar wound down his career at Wiener SC (1985–1986), SC Eisenstadt (1986–1989), SC Simmering (1989–1991), FC Oslip (1991–1993), SC Weisenbach (February 1993–1993), 1994), ASK Horitschon (1994-1997), UFC Weiden/See (February 1997-2001) and SC Moosbrunn (2001-2002).
