Nations League draw: We start in Turkey and finish in the Puskás Arena

UEFA conducted the draw for the 2020-21 Nations League in Amsterdam this week, the Hungarian men's national team finding itself in one of the most difficult groups with Russia, Turkey and Serbia this autumn.

UEFA has made minor changes since the first season of the 2018 campaign, increasing the number of leagues A, B and C to each include 16 national teams, while league D league only seven teams instead of 16. As a result, Hungary was included in League B, which means that they will almost certainly encounter stronger opponents than in the previous edition but, in the event of a possible group victory, they could also qualify for the top 16 teams in Europe.

In the draw in Amsterdam, Marco Rossi's side was placed in Group 3 of league B, the former Dutch maestro Rafael van der Vaart the special guest responsible for drawing Hungary out alongside Turkey, Serbia and Russia, these therefore being the three teams with whom Hungary will do battle home and away this autumn.

"Of course, the important thing for us now is the match, hopefully two, which are due at the end of March, as these will give us the chance to qualify for the European Championship, wheeas as being drawn in the second level in the Nations League means more for the future", Rossi told MLSZ.hu after the draw. "As far as the draw is concerned, I can't imagine harder opponents than those with whom we have been drawn. If you just look at the third pot, we draw Euro 2020 qualifiers Turkey, so that in itself says a lot about the strength of the group. We count all three of our rivals, Serbia, Turkey and Russia, as the favourites in the group, but we'll do our best to stay in league B, to grow when we play our opponents, so I'm positive for these autumn fixtures and I look forward to the contests".

The Nations League will again provide the chance to qualify for the next major international tournament, this time via a passage to the play-offs for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The best two Nations League group winners who do not qualify for the World Cup or play-offs through normal qualifying, will go into the 12-team World Cup play-offs in March 2022.
