95 years since Magical Magyar Jenő Buzánszky was born
The FIFA World Cup finalist and recipient of the prestigious 'National Sportsman' honour was capped 49 times for his country and was part of the all-conquering Hungary team which crushed England 6-3 in the 'Match of the Century' at Wembley Stadium in London in 1953.
Jenő Buzánszky was born in Dombóvár on May 4th 1925 and it was for the town's local team that he started his football career as a registered youth player in 1938. A short spell at Pécsi VSK in 1946/47 was followed by a move to Dorogi Bányász where the defender would spend the rest of his professional career, one which would conclude in 1960 after 330 appearances in official league matches.
Buzánszky later coached the Dorog club too but he will always be most famous for his role in the defensive line of the Magical Magyars, the Hungarian national team which, captained by Ferenc Puskás, went unbeaten for 31 matches between 1950 and 1954, a period which included Olympic football gold in Helsinki in 1952 and other historic victories over Italy, Austria, England and Scotland amongst others. That run came to an end in dramatic fashion in the 1954 FIFA World Cup final against West Germany but Buzánszky continued to represent Hungary with distinction until 1956.
In later years, Buzánszky received a steady stream of awards and honours in recognition of his glittering football career. The current football stadium in Dorog is named the Buzánszky Jenő Stadion. He passed away on 11th January 2015, the last of the twelve players to have beaten England at Wembley in 1953 and thereafter féted as 'Magical Magyars' to leave us.
