Bernd Storck leaves Hungary post by mutual consent
Hungary's head coach since the summer of 2015, Bernd Storck, has left his post with immediate effect after a rollercoaster two years in charge of the men's national team. His assistant Andreas Möller leaves with him but his other countrymen in the national-team set-up will remain in their positions. The MLSZ executive committee is now seeking a new coach with suitable international experience.
MLSZ's decision-makers met earlier today to discuss the situation and came to the conclusion with Mr Storck that it was in the best interests of both parties to part ways. At the same meeting, the executive committee requested of President Sándor Csányi that they begin the search for a successor immediately. As reported earlier, Hungary's next matches come in Luxembourg on 10th November and at home in the Groupama Aréna in Budapest against Costa Rica four days later. Due to the lack of time involved, it is not inconceivable that a caretaker coach may be asked to take the reins for these two fixtures.
Recognition of the Hungarian national teams' achievements while Bernd Storck was Sporting Director at MLSZ:
- Led the Under 20 national team at the 2015 World Cup in New Zealand where they progressed from their group and finished in 14th position
- After an absence of 44 years Mr Storck led the full Hungarian national men's team to the finals of a European Championship, in France in 2016, where the team qualified for the knockout stages as group winners and eventually finished in 13th position
- The Under 17 national men's team qualified for the last eight of the 2017 European Championship as group winners
- The U17 and U19 teams have qualified for five out of the last six qualifying tournaments in 2016 and 2017
- The full men's national team achieved its highest spot in the FIFA rankings since the system was introduced in the early 1990s, 18th in the world and 13th in Europe
- The full men's national team was voted Hungarian sports team of the year in 2015 and 2016 by the country's sports journalists' association and the Sportsperson of the Year Awards Gala.
The MLSZ Executive Committee recognises and thanks Bernd Storck for his work over the last three years which one can say has resulted in the biggest international success for the national team in recent memory, despite the less successful final period.
