Bolla and Zsolt Nagy return in latest Hungary squad

Hungary men's head coach Marco Rossi has called up 26 players for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Serbia and Lithuania, all but two of which were present in the previous squad in September.

The two who are fresh to this latest squad are Zsolt Nagy, the wide player who scored against England and Germany in last year's Nations League and has now recovered from serious injury, and Bendegúz Bolla, who finally found himself a new club in Servette at the end of the summer transfer window and has since played five times for the Swiss club, including one in the UEFA Europa League against Slavia Prague. Bolla steps in but is not a direct replacement for centre-back Willi Orbán who suffered a serious injury after the Euro qualifiers last month and will not play again this year.

Although Péter Gulácsi was already a member of the last squad in September, he hadn't yet played a club match since recovering from his own serious injury last season, so he didn't make an international appearance either, but since then he's played a full match for RB Leipzig after a year out. It is therefore no surprise that Gulácsi has been selected this time too.

"This time, we haven't called up any potential debutants", Marco Rossi told mlsz.hu. "We think it'd be more useful for these two decisive matches if only those who are already at home in the national team environment and perhaps already have international experience are selected, even if they may not have that many matches in their legs this season, so are perhaps not yet in top form".

The members of this men's full national-team squad will meet in Telki on Monday 9th October. Since the first match this time will only be on the following Saturday, the team will have two more days than they had in September to prepare for the match versus Serbia, a strong team who are level with Hungary on ten points in the European qualifying group.

"We all know very well that Serbia have a lot of top players", Hungary's head coach continued. "We're sure that Serbia will change a few things from the match in Belgrade. It's almost safe to say that Savic-Milinkovic will play together with Tadic and Mitrovic, but Gudelj's participation is a question for us for the time being. We know the Serbian national team very well and they know us very well, and anything can happen in a match like this. Whatever happens, we'll definitely be playing in front of a full house in front of our own fans, who always fervently support us in our matches. We're very confident that with their incredible encouragement, we'll be able to achieve a good result this time too. At the same time, it's important to say that the away fixture against Lithuania won't be easy either, even if it may seem so based on the situation in the group. Lithuania have drawn twice at home against Bulgaria and Montenegro in this qualifying campaign, so they'll be dangerous. Having said that, we must win if we want to qualify for the European Championship".

Two days after the match against Serbia in front of a capacity crowd in the Puskás Arena, Budapest, on 14th October, Rossi's squad will travel to Kaunas, where on 17th October they will take on Lithuania. More than a thousand tickets for the Lithuanian match have already been sold and the last available tickets can still be purchased on the meccsjegy.mlsz.hu website.
