ETO FC join Nyíregyháza in OTP Bank Liga

ETO FC have followed runaway Merkantil Bank Liga champions Nyregyháza in achieving promotion back to Hungary's top tier in men's football after edging to a single-goal success away at Ajka in the final round of this season's fixtures.

The main club in the prominent Hungarian city of Győr, its predecessor being 1965 European Cup semi-finalists Győri Vasas ETO, will provide the local population with top-tier football for the first time in nine years after taking the second promotion spot in this season's Hungarian second division.

Nyíregyháza Spartacus won the league easily with 79 points but behind them, a titanic promotion battle between ETO and Vasas of Budapest ensued all season long. The team from Győr led by two points going into the 34th and final round of fixtures and maintained that advantage by narrowly winning away at Ajka, Riquelme's 25-minute goal roving the difference and rendering Vasas's 4-0 thrashing of Soroksár academic.

Nyíregyháza and ETO FC will replace relegated Kisvárda and Mezőkövesd in the OTP Bank Liga, also traditionally known as Nb I, for the 2024/25 season.
