Europa League: Fradi seize play-off advantage over Plzen
A first-half goal from Mohammed Abu Fani proved the difference between hosts Ferencváros and Viktoria Plzen of Czech Republic after the first leg of their Europa League play-off tie in Budapest on Thursday evening.
Abu Fani's strike could be a crucial advantage in Plzen in a week's time and it's all the more welcome given the injury that befell reserve goalkeeper Ádám Varga - already covering for injured number one Dénes Dibusz - in the warm-up. Recent signing Dávid Gróf stepped in and enjoyed a fine debut, making several important saves to preserve his new side's lead.
Those only came after an initial period of home dominance though, one which was rewarded with the opening goal midway through the first half. Both sides had chances to score further goals through the match, but a combination of poor finishing, bad luck and good goalkeeping means Fradi take a single-goal advantage to the Czech Republic next week.
Robbie Keane's side will do so though without striker Barnabás Varga, whose latest yellow card means he'll miss the second leg through suspension. Should Hungary's reigning champions prevail in Plzen, they'd face either Athletic Bilbao of Spain or Lazio of Italy in the last 16.
