Europa League: Fradi too good for Malmo

Ferencváros defeated Swedish club Malmö 4-1 at home in the fifth round of the UEFA Europa League league phase, a victory which all but secures at least a play-off place ahead of the competition's knockout stages.

The reigning Hungarian league title holders shot into a two-goal lead within eleven minutes thanks to a penalty and a fine finish from striker Barnabás Varga, only for the visitors to soon halve the deficit with a spotkick of their own from Norwegian Erik Botheim. The second half saw Brazilian Kady Borges restore the hosts' lead with a well-taken goal early on, before Ibrahim Cissé rounded off the scoring with a headed fourth goal 16 minutes from time.

The Green Eagles have thus improved three positions to 11th place in the 36-team league table with nine points likely to be enough to advance to the knockout stages directly or via a play-off. The top eight teams after the eight-round league phase will progress directly to the Round of 16, while those placed between 9th and 24th will be drawn in home-and-away play-off ties to determine which teams will fill the remaining eight places in the last 16.

Ferencváros' next fixture will be away against Greek club PAOK in Thessaloniki in two weeks' time.
