Ferencváros retain Hungarian league title

Relegation-threatened Budapest Honvéd's shock 1-0 victory over second-placed Kecskemét means leaders Ferencváros now hold an unassailable nine-point lead at the top of the men's OTP Bank Liga. Although Kecskemét still have three games to play, they have won five fewer matches than Fradi this season and therefore that key metric means the reigning champions for the past four years will again be crowned Hungary's best league team..

League leaders almost from the outset, there never seemed much doubt that Ferencváros would extend their run as Hungarian champions to five seasons, especially when their nearest challengers for most of the campaign were newly-promoted and inexperienced Kecskemét, whose previous best finish to a league season was fifth in 2009 and 2012. Confirmation arrived without Hungary's most decorated club needing to kick a ball though, an early second-half goal from Honvéd's 19 year-old forward Márk Kerezsi handing his team a vital win over Kecskémet and elevation from the top tier's relegation zone for 48 hours at least.

Stanislav Cherchesov's reigning OTP Bank Liga title-holders set an explosive early pace, winning their first eight fixtures, scoring 24 goals and conceding only three, until Kecskemét punctured that flawless record with a 2-0 win at the start of October. Fradi surged on regardless and by the winter break they were 14 points clear of Kecskemét who headed a pack of five clubs chasing the leaders, all of which were from outside Hungary's traditional football stronghold of Budapest.

Although that lead has been reduced in recent times, it wasn't enough to stop Fradi equalling their club record of five consecutive league championship titles, achieved between 1909 and 1913. This means Ferencváros will again  be Hungary's representatives in next season's UEFA Champions League, while Kecskemét will now aim to secure runners-up spot and with it, a place in UEFA's Europa League competition.
