Former Kispest and Hungary winger István Pisont turns 50 today
The 31-times-capped midfielder, who celebrates his 50th birthday today, has coached numerous Hungarian youth national squads since retiring as a player.
Born in Orosháza in 1970, Pisont played in the county of Békés until the age of 18, when he moved to Hungary's capital city and joined Kispest Honvéd, where he made his debut on 11th March 1989. He stayed for five-and-a-half years in his first and main stint at the club, winning three Hungarian league titles and a Hungarian Cup, during which time he became known by fans as "A legnagyobb király" (The greatest king). A brief spell at Belgian club Charleroi was sandwiched between his first and second periods at Kispest, the latter so short that it only encompassed six matches in the autumn of 1995.
The midfielder's next stop was Beitar Jerusalem, where he won the Israeli league title twice before a year at Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany and three years back in Israel at Hapoel Tel-Aviv, where he won the league and cup double in 2000 and reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. In addition, Pisont earned 31 caps for the Hungarian national team between 1991 and 1999, scoring one goal away against Azerbaijan in late 1998.
Aged 32 in 2002, Pisont left Hapoel to play for a couple of less well-known Israeli clubs before returning to his homeland and winding down his career at MTK and Vecsés. A coaching career has followed since his retirement as a professional player in 2008, his clubs including Vecsés, Diósgyőr and Budapest Honvéd, where he is currently caretaker-head coach, as well as a seven-year period coaching in the Hungarian national youth-team setup between 2008 and 2015.
