Fradi retain men's league title while Fehérvár are relegated

Robbie Keane's Ferencváros side sealed a seventh consecutive OTP Bank Liga title with a 2-1 victory away at Győr, thus earning Hungary's most successful club their 36th Hungarian championship, this time by finishing three points ahead of second-placed Puskás Akadémia. At the other end of the league table, Debrecen secured their top-tier status with a win over Fehérvár, who take the second relegation spot alongside Kecskemét.

Ferencváros had had their fate in their hands for much of the season, having sat in second spot in the OTP Bank Liga during the winter break, but crucially with a game in hand which would take them back to top spot. So it proved, and although Puskás Akadémia stayed with the Budapest giants until the very end, even defeating them 1-0 in February, Fradi's greater consistency proved vital, a 13-match unbeaten run from mid-February onwards meaning a final-day success would confirm the retention of their league title.

The last team to become champions of Hungary before Ferencváros recent run of success was Fehérvár, then known as Videoton, but since the third national title in the club's history in 2018, they've gradually fallen from grace, that descent completed on Saturday with a 3-0 defeat at home to Debrecen, another multiple Hungarian champion of the 21st century now struggling to repeat former glories, which means Fehérvár will play second-tier football next season for the first time since 1999-2000. Bottom-placed Kecskeméti TE had already had their relegation confirmed weeks earlier, while the European qualification places will go to Ferencváros (1st place, Champions League qualifiers), Puskás Akadémia and Paks (exact competitions and stages to be confirmed).
