Gera returns to help national squad

Following head coach Marco Rossi's positive COVID test this morning, news which has ruled the Italian out of tonight's winner-takes- all EURO 2020 play-off final between Hungary and Iceland, former playmaker and current men's Under-21 coach Zoltán Gera has agreed to step in and help the full men's team prepare for this crucial fixture in the Puskás Aréna.

Zoltán Gera is a familiar name to football lovers throughout Europe, having played for Pécsi MFC, Ferencváros, West Bromwich Albion, Fulham and 97 times for Hungary in a hugely successful playing career, one which peaked at UEFA Euro 2016 when he helped his country win their tournament finals group ahead of eventual winners Portugal and reach the last 16 in France.

Gera retired two years ago to become the national team's assistant coach and now holds the head coach's role with the Under-21 squad as they prepare for next summer's European Championship, which will be jointly hosted by Hungary. Before that though, he has a new and pressing assignment, namely helping the absent Rossi's assistant coach Cosimo Inguscio and the rest of the backroom staff before and during the match, something which makes perfect sense given he knows the every squad member well and indeed played with many of them before his retirement.
