Holders Ferencváros knocked out of Hungarian Cup by second-division Kisvárda
The round-of-32 in the Hungarian Cup saw a number of top-flight clubs falter, the biggest surprise seeing Ferencváros beaten 1-0 away by second-division Kisvárda. Vasas, Haladás and Mezőkövesd were also knocked out by lower-league opposition, whilst county-level sides Nagyecsed, Sényő and Szarvas made it through to the round-of-16.
Ferencváros, cup winners last three years running, were dumped out of the competition by a first-half Zoltán Horváth penalty as second-division Kisvárda provided the biggest shock of this season’s Hungarian Cup so far.
Elsewhere, Vasas, Haladás and Mezőkövesd were also knocked out, only eight of the twelve NB I teams progressing to the next round. Vasas and Haladás both lost to third-division opponents, the former succumbing 2-1 away to Dunaújváros and the latter losing on penalties in Tiszaújváros. Mezőkövesd, meanwhile, lost 2-1 at second-division Gyirmót, who were relegated from the top division at the end of last season.
The other top-division teams who progressed didn’t have it all their own way and although league leaders Videoton made light work of disposing of third-division opponents Dabas and Puskás Akadémia hit County I-level team Eger for six, both Diósgyőr and Debrecen struggled to get past third-division Balassagyarmat and Monor. Honvéd meanwhile, needed penalties to beat second-division Budaörs.
