Honvéd join Vasas in relegation to second tier
Two Budapest giants will compete against each other in the country's second division in the 2023/24 season after a final-day defeat to Puskás Akadémia condemned Budapest Honvéd to a penultimate-placed finish just above Vasas in the OTP Bank Liga relegation zone.
Budapest Honvéd, Ferenc Puskás's former club and 14-time Hungarian champions, will compete in the country's second tier next season after failing to win their final match of the season away at Puskás Akadémia.
Dean Klafurić's team needed to secure victory while hoping MOL Fehérvár would drop points away at already-relegated Vasas, and while the latter came to pass courtesy of a goalless draw, Honvéd were unable to capitalise, a dramatic match seeing Luciano Slagveer's 87th-minute opener for Puskás Akadémia on the counter-attack cancelled out by Dónát Zsótér's deflected equaliser two minutes later.
Honvéd pushed hard for the goal which would secure their top-flight status but Brandon Domingues's 92nd-minute red card for two bookable offences made their task even harder and Artem Favorov's close-range finish for the hosts following a right-wing corner put matters beyond doubt. They will join fellow Budapest club Vasas in the Merkantil Liga next season, the 1958 European Cup finalists having already been relegated several games ago.
In their place, another famous name of Hungarian football, MTK Budapest, return to the top tier at the first time of asking following relegation in 2022 and they will be joined by Diosgyőr who won the second division by dominant 13 points.
